Pick of the Week

The Substance Film

Director Coralie Fargeat's bold satire addresses the oppressive nature of female beauty along with the perceived horrors of growing older. The veteran actress presents a masterful performance as Elisabeth, a mature actress demoted to presenting a workout series on TV. Edged out thanks to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she seeks out an enigmatic and horrifying procedure called "The Substance". This creates a new version of herself portrayed by Margaret Qualley, leading to an increasingly vampiric relationship among both women. October 17th, Paramount Plus

The Woman in Cabin 10

This classic whodunit mystery stars Knightley as Laura, a top-notch writer who decides to take a break from covering international wars to board an opulent ship alongside an ailing wealthy inheritor and donor, her husband, plus additional affluent passengers. However when an unknown lady goes overboard one night and everyone claims she was never there, the reporter's sleuthing skills take over. Out now, the Netflix platform

Presence

The acclaimed director challenges his film-making abilities in this innovative ghostly tale shot entirely from the viewpoint of a ghost. When a household featuring mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe settles into their fresh home, the filming device – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. The teen shows signs of conscious of the supernatural presence, and it looks like guarding her. Yet what is the reason? It's a fun idea that doesn't outstay its welcome, with a twist you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, Sky Cinema

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

Nicolas Cage fully commits to his eccentric image through this self-referential adventure. He plays a narcissistic film star called Nicolas Cage who accepts a lucrative offer to visit a festive event at a Mediterranean location for billionaire superfan Javi. Recruited by the intelligence agency to spy on the potential kingpin, the actor's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” is put to the test. October 11th, evening, Channel 4

This Creepy Thriller

The director's claustrophobic thriller remains effective despite the lack of a continuation. Set in the late 70s in Denver, several child abductions has rendered the youth on edge. When Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and held captive in a cellar, he dreads a fatal end. Yet the disconnected phone on the wall repeatedly calls, with spooky callers giving advice, as the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the conflict between God and Mammon, the victory is clear for materialism in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish film adaptation regarding the shamed TV preacher and her felon spouse. The actor acts as the greedy Jim, who proclaims at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. The couple begin capitalizing on the American public's spiritual convictions. It's an extravaganza of poor styling, bad makeup and insincerity, however Chastain manages to present the real-life figure in a likable light. October 14th, early morning, the Film4 channel

Black Bag

This week's second offering from the filmmaker is a spy mystery as tight like the turtlenecks worn by Michael Fassbender's intelligence officer. His assignment is with uncovering a mole inside the organization out of five possibilities – among them is his own wife. Each performer are masters of understated style, so a delicious mental battle of truth or lie unfolds. The supporting cast join in the smart espionage amusement. This Friday, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
